After a 20-year absence, Kawasaki returned to MotoGP as a work team in 2003 with the Ninja ZX-RR - the first four-stroke motorcycle. The 2003 season proved to be a tough one, but Japanese driver Shinya Nakano showed up in 2004 and great progress was made. In 2006, the machine was eye-catching with its exterior design, a 990cc inline four-cylinder engine with a unique variable-ignition system. Driven by Nakano and Randy de Puniet, the lime green machines outclassed the top teams in the races, while Nakano finished second in round 8 in the Netherlands.
